Free, Fun Storytelling @ Cheng San Public Library

Every Wednesday at 3:30-4:00pm, my son joins some other children for a free English storytelling session for 4-6 year olds at

Storytelling @ Cheng San Library, Hougang

Cheng San Public Library (#03-11, Hougang Mall).  Sometimes there are only 5 kids, and other times, especially during school holidays, there could be as much as 20 or more kids.

My son loves going to these storytelling sessions conducted by the library staff.  He especially enjoys the ones conducted by Mdm Azizah.  She’s a very warm and animated storyteller.  She welcomes all kids to join (even much older kids sometimes sit in), even latecomers.  She gets the kids so engaged in the stories by asking them questions about the stories.  She plays games and sings songs with the kids.  Sometimes, she even gives them small prizes, like stickers for example) at the end of the session.

She’s also very fair with the kids.  Just last Wednesday, when the storytelling session ended, some of the kids were “fighting” to borrow the 3 books she had chosen to read that day.  To give all the kids a chance to read the books, she asked the kids and their parents/guardians to take turns reading the books within the library premises on that day.  Since we didn’t have time then to linger at the library, she offered to lend my son the storybook about the crocodile next Wednesday when we come back for another storytelling session.

I’m so thankful for these free, fun storytelling sessions at Cheng San Public Library, and for Mdm Azizah 🙂

  1. Hi there! I’m Azizah’s colleague, from the Public Libraries. I love this post because: (1) your son enjoy his visits to the library, and that’s one powerful incentive for us to do what we do; (2) we kinda know kids have their favourite librarians, but we are rarely able to confirm the fact! (3) Azizah is one heck of a Children’s librarian and a colleague we respect — so to see her being acknowledged like this is fantastic! Thank you for this post 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for your comment. I am only too happy to post about how great a storyteller and librarian Mdm Azizah is 🙂 My kids and I go to the public libraries regularly (usually Cheng San and Bishan) and we have also been helped by some other librarians too. Maybe we’ll bump into you someday. Thanks, and keep up the good work 🙂

  2. Heh, I don’t conduct storytelling sessions or public programmes on a regular basis anymore (last time was maybe 10 years ago). Work is now more administrative in nature. BTW, after reading your ‘Dioramas of Singapore Tales’ post, I wonder if you’ve considered volunteering at the library to conduct one or two sessions for other parents (or kids?) — on creating dioramas by drawing inspiration and ideas from library collections. Just a thought. I’d be happy to email you with more details, or I could request Azizah to have a chat with you on this. As I said, just a thought. No pressure. Cheers!

  3. Hi Leah, thanks very much for your wonderful accolade. I’m glad your son has enjoyed the storytelling sessions. I’ve always enjoyed doing this with the children 🙂 Cheers!
