God, Not a Fortune Cookie, Holds the Future

This week’s Sermons4Kids is entitled He Holds the Future.

From Sermons4Kids:

Scripture: He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.” Luke 21:8 (NIV)

The sermon talks about how we enjoy reading our “fortunes” from Chinese fortune cookies.  While we may get a laugh from reading them, should we believe that these cookies can predict our future?  In the Bible, Jesus warns his disciples about believing anyone and everyone who claims to see or know the future (like when the world will end, or if the next year will bring you more wealth, or if you’ll make a good career move tomorrow, etc.).  Only God knows the future.  Our job is to have a faith that trusts in Him and that works to bring His love to others.

For this sermon’s activity, I asked my kids to make Play-Doh fortune cookies.  I printed out some fortune cookie sayings and the kids inserted them into their Play-Doh fortune cookies.  You can find some general fortune cookie sayings at chinese-fortune-cookie.com and some kid-friendly ones at buzzle.com.  The kids had a lot of fun making these pretend fortune cookies, and even more fun opening them up to get the sayings.  At the end of it all, of course, these were all just for fun.  Maybe next time, I can print Scripture passages and have the kids put them into “fortune cookies.”  🙂
