Inspired to Play

Breakfast Nook In Minecraft

This morning, I was awestruck when my 8-year-old son just told me, “Mom, you know what inspired me to play Minecraft?”

He had me at the word inspired. Wow, to hear an 8-year-old talk about being inspired.  Music to my ears.

My son R continued, “First, my friend L suggested that I play Minecraft.  Then, my other friend E showed me this Minecraft video called Revenge by Captain Sparklez.  When I saw the video, I said, ‘Wow, this has so many cool things!  I have to play this game!”

From those moments in 2012 when he was first inspired, he has become a huge Minecraft player and fan.  He loves the game and the music videos and parodies about it. The things he and his friends build in the game are amazing, especially to a non-gamer like me! He memorizes the songs and sings along with the videos. He even talked about writing his own Minecraft parody song.  Recently, he started making his own Minecraft aminations with Mine-imator.

I’m not a big fan of video games, but I have come to accept that gaming is a part of my son’s life. My job is to help ensure that he balances his play time among video games, outdoor play and toys, and that play time keeps him healthy in mind and body. I’m glad that given a choice, he still prefers to run around and play games with his friends rather than play by himself on a computer or console.  I hope that I will always be able to support him in the things that inspire him and make him happy.
