InkTober Day 24: Rod of Asclepius

Rod of Asclepius drawing

My InkTober drawing for Day 24 is a Rod of Asclepius – a symbol associated with healing and medicine.

“The Rod of Asclepius takes its name from the god Asclepius, a deity associated with healing and medicinal arts in Greek mythology. Asclepius’s attributes, the snake and the staff, sometimes depicted separately in antiquity, are combined in this symbol.”

Yesterday, Oct 24, was a day spent with doctors and a day thinking about health and healing. I wanted to draw the modern symbol of medicine and healing.  Like many, I thought it was the caduceus – the traditional symbol of Hermes that features two snakes intertwined around a winged staff. With some quick research, I learned that it was confused with the Rod of Asclepius. (And I learned something new!)
